Electrical Panel Upgrades & Home Rewiring

If your home still runs on a 100-amp panel, a fuse box, or a recalled brand like Federal Pacific or Zinsco, the panel is the weakest link in the whole house. APEX Electric replaces and upgrades residential service panels across St. Charles County — pulling the permit, coordinating the utility disconnect, and leaving you with a labeled, inspected 200-amp service that has room to grow.

Signs your panel is due for an upgrade

Breakers that trip when you run the microwave and the air conditioner together. Lights that dim when the HVAC kicks on. A panel with no open slots left, or one packed with tandem breakers doubled into single spaces. Any of these mean the service is being asked to carry more than it was designed for.

Older homes across O'Fallon, St. Peters and St. Charles were wired for a fraction of today's load. Add an EV charger, a hot tub, a finished basement or a heat pump and a 100-amp service runs out of headroom fast. We perform a load calculation first, so the recommendation is based on your actual demand rather than a guess.

What the work involves

A standard panel replacement is a one-day job. We pull the electrical permit with your municipality, schedule the utility disconnect, set the new panel and meter base, land and label every circuit, drive new grounding electrodes, and install AFCI/GFCI protection where current code requires it.

You get a clearly labeled directory, a walkthrough of what changed, and the inspection scheduled on your behalf. Nothing is closed up until it passes.

Rewiring older homes

Knob-and-tube and cloth-insulated wiring were never designed for grounded appliances or modern insulation. Aluminum branch wiring from the 1960s and 70s develops loose, overheating connections at the terminations. Both are common findings in home inspections, and both can hold up a sale or an insurance policy.

We rewire in stages where it makes sense — worst circuits first — so the house stays livable and the cost is predictable. Where a full rewire is not warranted, we can remediate aluminum terminations with approved connectors instead.

Questions

Panel Upgrades & Rewiring
questions.

The things people ask us most about this work.

Most residential 200-amp service upgrades fall in a predictable range that depends on the meter base, the mast, how far the panel sits from the service point, and whether the utility requires a new drop. We quote a fixed price after seeing the existing service — no hourly surprises.

Yes. Every municipality in St. Charles County requires a permit and inspection for a service change. The permit gets pulled and we meet the inspector, so it is not something you have to manage.

Typically four to eight hours on the day of the swap. We schedule the utility disconnect first thing in the morning so power is restored the same day.

Both have documented histories of breakers failing to trip under fault conditions. Many insurers now surcharge or decline coverage on homes that still have them. Replacement is the only real remedy — these panels cannot be brought up to standard with new breakers.
